Annual Events
Membership Meetings
Our members are invited to meet five times a year, usually on the first Sunday of odd months, except in July. On the agenda are reports from the board and each group, current activities at the House of Pacific Relations, and event planning for upcoming House of Germany events. Board elections are held at the November meeting. Members enjoy appetizers and drinks after the meetings.
Springfest and Christmas Party
These annual events include a luncheon and entertainment from our House of Germany choirs, Kinderwerkstatt classes, and occasionally from other groups. Members get together to meet and enjoy each other’s company.
Lawn Program
This is each House’s annual opportunity to showcase their culture and language through music, dance, costumes, and food, on the central lawn in front of the cottages. This is one of our annual fundraisers and usually happens in September. Members are invited to donate homemade cakes, volunteer at the food sales, set-up and takedown, and to enjoy the entertainment.
Lantern Fest
This annual tradition celebrates Saint Martin’s act of kindness towards a beggar many centuries ago. Children act out the famous scene and walk with their homemade lanterns through the dark November night, singing traditional Saint Martin’s songs. Afterwards, all members share baked goods and warm drinks together.
December Nights
December Nights is the largest holiday market in Balboa Park. The House of Germany annually participates in this event. We sell traditional German baked goods and food in our cottage and alcoholic beverages in the Spirit Garden. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Members are invited to volunteer with decorating, preparing and selling at the food and drink booths, and helping with the set-up and breakdown of the different booths.
