At this beloved German autumn tradition, “children” of all ages walk with their lanterns, singing traditional songs and lighting up the night. November 11 is Saint Martin’s Day, commemorating a Roman soldier who shared his warm cloak with a beggar on a cold winter night.

Schedule:

• 5:30 PM – Meet at the House of Germany, where you can pick up any last-minute lantern supplies, such as sticks and lights.

• 5:40–6:15 PM – Community lantern walk through Balboa Park.

• Around 6:20 PM – Short Kinderchor concert, followed by an elementary class presentation of the story of Sankt Martin. We’ll then gather to share our potluck of baked goods and other snacks, along with hot cider.

Bring your lanterns! We are offering a Lantern-Making Workshop on Saturday, November 7, at 10:00 AM at the cottage.
